Een bericht op Facebook van een vriendin die tijdelijk in Egypte verblijft: De dagelijkse berichten en beelden van de vluchtelingenstroom richting Europa worden we ook hier stilaan gewoon. Ik betrap mezelf erop dat ik vaak niet echt meer luister wanneer ze op de televisie zijn. Tot je het verhaal een keer van de andere kant hoort. Syriërs die hun land ruim 25 jaar geleden zijn ontvlucht en inmiddels in Egypte een heel nieuw leven hebben opgebouwd. Ze voelen zich een voor een geroepen om de tocht naar Duitsland in te zetten. Mijn mond viel op de grond toen een van hen me vertelde over zijn plannen om met $7000 met zijn gezin van drie aan de juiste papieren en transport te kunnen komen. De prijs voor een leven lang verder niks doen want daar krijg je gratis huisvesting, eten en nog maandelijks geld er bovenop. Dat waren letterlijk zijn woorden. Alleen voor Syriërs glunderde hij. Dat veertig familieleden intussen de oversteek al met succes hebben gemaakt sterkte hem in zijn overtuiging van een goede afloop. Een boel tegenargumenten schoten door mijn hoofd. Wat als het niet lukt ? Wat als de selectieprocedure er ginds anders over beslist ? Waarom hier je job, je huis en je leven opgeven voor al die onzekerheid ? Ik heb wijselijk gezwegen en hem het allerbeste toegewenst. Ne soyons pas naïfs, de echte oorlogsslachtoffers die hebben geen $7000. Zij leven alleen nog met de focus dat hun bedje in Duitsland gespreid staat. Dat is het nieuws dat zij hier krijgen van hun familie die daar al is en er goed werd ontvangen. Deze Syriër is geen armoedzaaier, hoor. Een deftige man in een deftig pak met een deftige job die al jaren weg is uit zijn land. Hij klopte letterlijk met zijn hand op zijn broekzak toen hij zei dat je daar een huis, eten en nog geld op de koop toe krijgt en niets hoeft te doen. “Alleen voor Syriërs” was al lachend zijn argument. Die kwam afscheid nemen en laat zich door niemand meer tegenhouden. En als het hem lukt zal hij met veel plezier zijn Syrische nationaliteit waar hij zo trots op is inruilen voor de Duitse. Toen hij weg was stond ik aan de grond genageld. “
