Heuglijk nieuws: 21 augustus 1959, de vijftigste ster op de Stars and Stripes is een feit met de annexatie toetreding van Hawaï.
Alaska ging op 3 januari 1959 al vooraf.
Hawaï, moest en zou deel uitmaken van de Amerikaanse Unie.
We blikken even terug en vragen ons af in hoever de VSA Rusland met de vinger kunnen wijzen voor de annexatie van de Krim.
Hawaï was een onafhankelijke natie en koninkrijk vooraleer het door de VSA bezet werd. Zonder rekening te houden met de wensen van de bevolking primeerde hebzucht en militaire belangen boven internationaal recht. De Hawaïaanse regering werd afgezet ten gunste van goed gesitueerde Amerikaanse plantage eigenaars en geo-politieke interesses. Het goedpraten van de coup, de nep redenen werden verzonnen na de bezetting. Verneem hoe het staatshoofd gevangen werd gezet, gechanteerd werd tot ze wou aftreden.
De Hawaïaanse regering en de koningin werd de macht ontnomen op 17 januari 1893 door een relatief kleine groep mannen, de meesten van Amerikaans-Europese herkomst, gevolgd door het Amerikaanse leger.

In 1857 Grand Duke Konstantin, a younger brother of Emperor Alexander II, kicked off a plan aimed at the cession of Alaska to the United States. Since the Russian American Company was considered the main obstacle to the plan, Grand Duke Konstantin had made every effort to ruin the company, using various measures including what we now call an “information war.” After years of pressure the company saw substantial financial losses and its holders were deprived from the right to rule it.”(=einde citaat).
Over het financiële aspect van de verkoop :
“The cession was shrouded in secrecy and the text of the Treaty had long not been published. Mironov dismissed the myth that the American gold sank somewhere in the Baltic Sea. Citing archival documents, the historian claimed that in accordance with the deal the money had been transferred to European banks, and then went to companies affiliated with Grand Duke Konstantin. Eventually, Russia’s Treasury got almost nothing for Alaska, Mironov emphasized”(=einde citaat).
Of één der zovele oplichtingen uit de geschiedenis.
De zaak is echter niet van de baan :
“However, the Alaska Cession Treaty still prompts a lively debate among Western and Russian experts. Some Russian researchers even go so far as to claim that Alaska was not sold, but leased for 99 years; others point to the fact that the sum of the deal was very small.” (=einde citaat).
Het gaat hier dan ook om een geschil, dat een potentiëel gewapend conflict inhoudt tussen Rusland en de VSA, of dat kan dienen als pasmunt bij andere potentiële conflicten. (bv in Europa).
Afgezien van het voormelde, geeft de tekst in het bruggetje ook een beeld van de totaal onderbelichte rol van Rusland in de Amerikaanse burgeroorlog.
