Music: Jef van Hoof (1886-1959)
Jef van Hoof was a Flemish composer and conductor, born in Antwerp. He was a pupil of Paul Gilson and was highly influenced by the works of Peter Benoit. He composed chamber music, symphonic works, art songs, works for solo piano and organ and sacred music.
He composed songs on poems by Flemish authors such as René de Clercq or the Jewish-Flemish Nico Gunzburg. He is particularly well known for the famous Flemish battle song “Groeninghe” on a poem by Guido Gezelle. In 1933 he co-founded the “Vlaams Nationaal Zangfeest” (Flemish National Song Festival) where he worked as a conductor for many years. He also conducted concerts associated with the Flemish Movement.

In 1917, the Flemish poet De Clercq wrote the patriotic song “Daar is maar één Vlaanderen” (there is only one Flanders) that became the national anthem of the Flemish separatists, who received a lot of support of factions of the Jewish community in Antwerp. On December 22, 1917, the Council of Flanders (“Raad van Vlaanderen”) declared its independence from Belgium.
Dutch lyrics:
Only one country can be the country of the maker of the lyrics. It’s not the country of the Rhone or the Rhine River. There is only one joy, only one pain, only one love and only one sorrow. The country can only grow through acts, and the poet claims to be a man of action. The song concludes with the statement that Flanders is perishing and with the idea that, in this world, the winner takes it all.

This video is made of photographs of the Flemish city of Ypres in the First World War, after it suffered heavy damage, affecting every house in the city centre. The whole region was equally devastated. The last picture, however, is a black-and-white reproduction of “Canadian Gunners in the Mud, Passchendaele” (1917), a painting by Alfred Bastien (1873-1955). Bastien was one of the painters whom the Belgian army commissioned paintings to be made at the Western Front. In July/August 1918, Lieutenant Bastien was attached as a war artist to the Canadian 22nd Battalion.

ik heb wat problemen met uw uitnodigende titel “contacteer ons” Ik krijg soms interessante E-mails , stuur ze door , maar krijg geen respons noch op uw contacteer ons , noch op uw E-mail adres redactie@golfbrekers.be . Hoe geraak ik in uw brievenbus ? Ik begrijp best dat ik niet de enige ben maar probeer al sinds de geboorte van Golfbrekers mijn steentje bij te dragen !
