Tot de ontdekking gekomen dat Apartheid nog zo slecht niet was???
‘There is a word that the world has grown to hate, and this is the Afrikaans word Apartheid. This word, in its proper Afrikaans sense, really means the ability to tell different things apart – to recognise their apartness – the phenomenon of being able to distinguish. The reason why the world has come around to hate this word is because it failed to grasp its treu meaning. It is untranslatable into any of the languages I know. Unfortunatly the whole world had decided to translate it into discrimination, which is actually closer to being an antonym rather than a synonym of Apartheid. Discrimination is to distinguish and decide which is best. Apartheid is to distinguish without deciding which is best. Apartheid is what we want – but we do not want discrimination’.
Fragment uit het hoofdstuk ‘Hail to thee, white man!’ uit het boek Africa is my witness van Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa. Hij schreef daarin een opdracht op 14 april 1976 aan Nkosi Bulalimfene, een man die het blijkbaar op apen gemunt had want hij noemt hem ‘die een wat sleg Bobbejaane dood’. Ik kon het door de Zuloe getekende boek in een antiquariaat boekhandel op de kop tikken.
